W. Dundee board may remain short one
For more than a month, the West Dundee village board has had an empty seat.
In that time, no resident has expressed interest in filling the position vacated when Trustee John Mayer resigned, citing his intention to return to school and additional work obligations.
Under state statute, the village president is required to submit two names to the village board within 60 days of a board member's departure.
Village Manager Joe Cavallaro said there was still about 15 months left in Mayer's term when he submitted his resignation, which was effective Dec. 18.
"Under the law, there is no obligation to fill the position," said village attorney John Brechin. "But a nomination must be made, which the board can either vote to approve or reject."
If the first nomination is rejected, a second name must be submitted within a reasonable time frame, Brechin said.
Should the board choose to reject the second name, trustees can either function with five trustees and the village president or elect to fill the position temporarily.
If a temporary appointment is made, it must be one of the two names submitted, Brechin said.
Village President Larry Keller said the board is in no rush to replace Mayer.
"We have not had any 4-3 votes, and we don't have many anyway," Keller said. "So far, there the board hasn't had problems functioning with six members."
Keller said he would meet with candidates in the coming days.
"There will be an attempt to find people who are qualified to fill the village trustee position," Keller said.
