Visitation Sunday for Geneva High student
Geneva High School student Johnathon McNeil will always be a part of Viking football, even after his untimely death Thursday.
Instead of flowers, the family has asked that people who want to honor McNeil contribute to a memorial fund to buy a new sound system from Burgess Field. McNeil spent many Friday nights there playing left tackle on the offensive line for the varsity, including last year's 13-1 team that placed second in the state.
McNeil, 18, of Geneva, died at Delnor-Community Hospital. He had been hospitalized there since Wednesday.
Visitation for McNeil will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at his church, United Methodist Church of Geneva, 211 Hamilton St. Church officials ask that the parking lot immediately west of the building be reserved for use by the elderly and disabled.
The funeral is at 1 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Geneva, West Campus, 3435 Keslinger Road. It is being held there because the United Methodist Church is too small for the large number of mourners expected to attend.
School officials are asking students who attend the funeral to have their parents send a note or call the school's attendance office to excuse their absence.
McNeil was a member of the school's concert choir for three years. He participated in charity work with the football team, including working at the St. Peter Barn Sale last fall. He was a member of the National Honor Society and the school's Ambassador Club; the club, for students with strong leadership and communication skills, welcomes new students and visitors to the school.
McNeil was also was an umpire for youth baseball games.
He is survived by his parents, Ken and Kathy; brothers Kyle and Matthew; grandparents Everett and Avalon McNeil, and Larry and Ruth Ann Rovelstad; three aunts; and two cousins.
Donations to the "Memorial Fund for Johnathon McNeil" should be sent to First Choice Bank, 1900 W. State St., Geneva, IL 60134.
