Pizza lovers give kudos to Palatine restaurants

If you haven't tried pizza at Artistic Cuisine or J.J. Twiggs, it's time to stop in for a slice.

These two local restaurants earned best pizza honors in a Palatine Jaycees contest last month.

The competition pitted six of Palatine's best pizza establishments against each other. Nearly 200 local residents paid a judging fee to taste and vote for their favorite.

Artistic Cuisine was named the Best Overall Pizza in Palatine for its thin specialty pizza, a category it also topped. J.J. Twiggs earned the Best Thin Cheese, Best Thin Sausage, Best Thin Pepperoni, Best Thick Cheese, Best Thick Sausage, Best Thick Pepperoni and Best Thick Specialty awards.

All the pizzas were judged in a blind tasting. People paid $5 to participate, and all profits were donated to Northwest Community Healthcare Foundation's Adolescent Dependency Program.

New site about vision: Palatine optometrist Dr. Robert Gerowitz has launched a new Web site to assist local residents in analyzing an alternative treatment to laser surgery in correcting vision problems. It is allaboutorthok.net. The site details Gerowitz's practice, his background and training in optometry, as well as his practice philosophy.

Restaurant updates: Emmett's Tavern & Brewery has opened in its former spot on Brockway Street. Both times I've visited the eating establishment, it's been packed. It seems that everyone in Palatine is happy to have the restaurant back.

Gianni's Café, an Italian restaurant in Kildeer, is expected to have its second location -- in downtown Palatine -- open by late March. The restaurant will be on the ground floor of the Providence building.

Attention former players: Palatine Youth Baseball and Softball is looking for volunteers to assist its coaches for the 2008 season.

Volunteers would help girls ages 7 to 12 learn the fundamentals of softball. If you played softball in high school or college and would like the chance to develop talented young players, you should apply.
