2 central Illinois men killed in Afghanistan

SPRINGFIELD -- Military officials say two men from central Illinois were killed while serving with the Army National Guard in Afghanistan.

Officials with the Illinois Army and Air National Guard in Springfield on Tuesday identified the men as Staff Sgt. Jason Burkholder of Champaign and 1st Lt. Jared Southworth of Oakland. They were killed Sunday by a bomb, along with an Afghan police official and a civilian. The incident remains under investigation.

Southworth served on the Oakland Police Department. The 27-year-old Illinois native attended Oakland High School, Lakeland College and Eastern Illinois University. He had a wife and four children.

Burkholder was a 27-year-old former Marine who was on has second deployment. The graduate of Elida High School in Ohio was married.
