Governor renews demand for senator to quit

Gov. Pat Quinn says if embattled U.S. Sen. Roland Burris doesn't quit within the next two weeks, he wants lawmakers to approve a special election that could remove Burris from office.

Appearing on WGN-AM's "The Steve Cochran Show" on Thursday, Quinn said he spoke with the top two Democrats in the General Assembly about the possibility of moving ahead with legislation to set up a special election.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan has said she believes the state can enact such a law.

Last week, Quinn called for Burris to resign. He and other politicians say Burris can't effectively represent the state after revealing more extensive contacts with Gov. Rod Blagojevich allies than he originally told he House panel weighing Blagojevich's impeachment.

Under current state law, appointments to Senate vacancies last until the next federal election.
