Chicago-area poll finds support for Olympic bid
A Chicago Tribune poll has found that an estimated two-thirds of Chicago residents hope the city hosts the 2016 Summer Olympics Games, but many don't want tax money used to fund the event.
The telephone poll of 350 people in Chicago, suburban Cook County and adjacent counties found that most are skeptical that private contributions will cover the cost of hosting the Games. The survey was conducted Wednesday through Thursday and has a margin of error of plus or minus 5.2 percentage points.
About 64 percent of respondents wanted the Games and 28 percent didn't. Of all those surveyed, 75 percent said they opposed the use of tax money.
Area residents also voiced concern about increased congestion and security threats.
Chicago must submit its formal bid for the Games by Thursday.
