Offense misses the mark as Red Stars lose 1-0

For a self-described attacking team, there's nothing so depressing as a shutout loss.

Except maybe back-to-back shutout losses.

FC Gold Pride managed to keep the Chicago Red Stars (2-2-2, 8 points) out of its net Saturday night in Bridgeview, going back to California with a 1-0 victory.

"This team has showed and will continue to show it's got lots of character," Red Stars coach Emma Hayes said. "They're disappointed. There's a quiet locker room in there right now, because they know they should have gotten a little more from the game. But their character will carry them through beyond this. I'm pleased with some areas of our performance. There was some good stuff at times."

FC Gold Pride (3-3-1, 10 points) got its goal in the 30th minute following an Adriane cross. Gold Pride's Tiffeny Milbrett tipped the ball just as Red Stars goalkeeper Caroline Jonsson dove for the cross. Milbrett somehow got the ball from Jonsson to Christine Sinclair, who turned and found an open net inviting her to shoot.

"We played well at times today and I thought that we had a lot of attacking chances," Red Stars midfielder Megan Rapinoe said. "We just didn't get a goal."

"Both teams had several chances to put the ball in the back of the net, and fortunately we got one in the first half," FC Gold Pride coach Albertin Montoya added.

FC Gold Pride outshot the Red Stars 12-7 for the game.

The Red Stars' best chances came early in the game, but both Rapinoe and Cristiane were called offsides, and a Rapinoe goal was disallowed.

"The first half our attacking play was exciting. It was the best we've been this season," Hayes said. "Cristiane proved her worth and her abilities and was unfortunate not to score. I believe one of them was not offside."
