Shovel out of respect for those who walk
In regards to John Horvat's smug remarks about not shoveling, I would like to say that a selfish attitude of that nature puts an added burden on the people who truly need the sidewalks cleared. I am not speaking of the joggers and the walkers, but the seniors, the children that walk to school and the handicapped who rely on cleared walkways to get around.
Case in point, I recently encountered a gentleman who was nearly face down on an unshoveled sidewalk. I pulled over to help him get back on his feet, something he couldn't have done by himself. In talking to him I found out he was a veteran who had suffered a stroke a few years ago and he needed to walk because that was the only form of therapy that really worked for him. I offered him a ride but he declined and thanked me saying proudly that he has walked nearly 7,000 miles and has improved greatly because of it.
Did I mention that this gentleman needs a cane to walk? Oh and by the way Mr. Horvat, this gentleman also told me that he shovels his sidewalk or his neighbors clear it for him.
Someday you may be in a similar situation, maybe you will be fortunate to have someone help you, or maybe not. Fresh air and exercise are good for you. Give it a try!
