Libertyville woman saluted

Libertyville resident Jean Keehn will be honored Tuesday, Feb. 17, as the Veteran of the Month for February. The presentation at 11 a.m. at the North Chicago VA Medical Center will be made by Dan Grant, the newly appointed director of the Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs. The award highlight the work of military veterans who provide inspiration to their community and other veterans.

District 70 book fees up

Student textbook fees for the 2009-10 school year in Libertyville Elementary District 70 will increase slightly to cover costs of online registration, which begins this spring. District 70 has pledged to save money on paper, postage and manpower and reduce the its carbon footprint. "We continue to say, 'No more paper,'" said Superintendent Mark Friedman. Fees will increase by $5 across the board but will largely be offset because a $3 party fee will be dropped. Student fees are $60 for kindergarten; $65 for first through fifth grade; and $80 for sixth, seventh and eighth grade. Students also pay a $20 technology fee.

Special needs addressed

Lincolnshire-Prairie View Elementary District 103 is hosting a session for parents of children with special needs 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23 at the Daniel Wright Junior High School library, 1370 Riverwoods Road, Lincolnshire. Town hall forums on economy

State Sen. Susan Garrett of Lake Forest and state Rep. Karen May of Highland Park) will host town hall meetings Saturday, Feb. 28 in Lake Forest, Deerfield and Northbrook to discuss the economy, budget proposals and the General Assembly's spring agenda and initiatives. The Democrats will meet the public 10-11 a.m. at the Lake Forest Health and Fitness Center, 1200 N. Recycling efforts honored

The Solid Waste Agency of Lake County has recognized Vernon Township for outstanding effort and participation in its electronics collection program. Since 2005, the township has offered residents the opportunity to recycle computers by dropping off their broken or unwanted equipment at the township highway facility. Last year, the township partnered with SWALCO to host more frequent and expanded collections to include all types of electronics. An estimated 24,000 pounds of electronics were collected at the most recent event on Jan. 9. Electronics collection events are planned for May 22 and Nov. 23. Visit www.swalco.org.
