Don't wait for the 'Taste' to go exploring in St. Charles

I enjoyed a cold drink at Vi's Tap on First Street in St. Charles after a softball game as much as the next guy, and I understood the concern when Vi's was going to be leveled as part of the First Street renovation project.

You should take the time to walk behind Za Za Trattoria to see what has transformed from the ashes of the old tavern.

A perfect time would be at the city's "Taste of the Plaza" celebration from 2 to 6 p.m. Aug. 16, but it's a pleasant experience to check it out before that and enjoy the water fountain, benches and atmosphere.

If you wait to go to the "Taste," you'll be able to enjoy samplings from plenty of St. Charles restaurants.

A sweet item: A church bulletin is a simple form of communication. It tells what is happening at the church and how the activities tie in with the community, be it a food or clothing drive.

It tells who is doing what, and who needs our prayers. With all of those great things going on, what item do you think made me mark a note on my calendar after glancing at the St. Patrick Church bulletin when I recently visited? The Women of St. Patrick's annual Scarecrow Festival cookie sale Oct. 9 to 11 in front of the downtown church in St. Charles. My note was as simple as a church bulletin - "Buy cookies."

For the river: I mentioned local river shoreline improvements in a recent column, but you can see some of it while enjoying a nice walk or run.

The third annual Bob Leonard 5K Run and Walk-A-Thon will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Pottawatomie Park Pavilion in St. Charles. When he was alive, Leonard was an active friend to the Fox River.

His friends made sure the river would continue to benefit on his behalf, and the beautiful Bob Leonard Walkway along the river is just the start.

Those who would like to participate Saturday can register by calling Deb Pfaff at (630) 513-5386 or via e-mail at deb@dtown.org.

It's a private diamond: If I were coaching a youth baseball team, the diamond on the Fox Valley Bible Church property on Randall Road in St. Charles would catch my eye.

It's not a baseball field for public use; so don't bother the fine folks at the church by calling and asking if your team can use it.

The diamond caught my attention for the first time recently, even though it has been there for many years. Some red, white and blue bunting along the fences made it stand out this time.

Apparently, the field was put together years ago for use by a team or organization that had some church members involved. It's not there for the church to use for programs and such, so it has remained a private field. Because of liability issues, the church can't be letting anyone who happens to have a team use it.

It should be a compliment to the church if anyone does ask, because it really is a nice-looking diamond.
