Victorious Vols not exactly overjoyed

Even after a lopsided victory, Candace Parker did some self-diagnosis of what she believes is ailing the defending national champions.

Sure, No. 2 Tennessee weathered a sloppy first half and cruised to a 65-40 victory over host Kentucky (8-9, 2-1 SEC), but she still was predicting the team would get an earful from coach Pat Summitt after being outrebounded 36-28.

"We're trying to take steps, and I guess admitting you have a problem is the first step," said Parker, who scored 23 points.

"Sometimes we stand around and watch Candace Parker play and rebound," Summitt said.

The Lady Vols (15-1, 3-0) had no assists and scored just 27 points in the first half, their lowest total of the season.

N. Carolina 87, Boston Coll. 59: Freshmen Cetera DeGraffenreid scored a season-high 20 points, Rashanda McCants added 19 and third-ranked North Carolina beat visiting Boston College.

Jessica Breland scored 12 of her 18 points in the decisive first half for the Tar Heels (17-1, 4-0 Atlantic Coast Conference).

The nation's highest-scoring team held the Eagles (14-5, 2-2) without a field goal for more than 11 minutes and broke the game open with a 30-1 run that bridged halftime.

Ohio State 43, Illinois 42: Maria Moeller made a 3-pointer with 14 seconds remaining to give 16th-ranked Ohio State a victory over visiting Illinois.

Down by 7 points with 4:56 left, the Buckeyes got a layup from Jantel Lavender and a 3-pointer from Marscilla Packer to cut Illinois' lead to 42-40.

Moeller scored on her only shot of the game to give the Buckeyes (14-3, 5-1 Big Ten) their fifth straight win.

Ashlee Trebilcock led the Buckeyes with 11 points.

Jenna Smith scored 16 points for Illinois (11-6, 3-3).

Stanford 89, Arizona 64: Kayla Pedersen matched her season high with 22 points, and Candice Wiggins had 12 of her 19 points in the second half to lead No. 7 Stanford (15-3, 5-2 Pac-10), which won its 10th straight against host Arizona. Ashley Whisonant led Arizona (6-11, 0-6) with 17.

California 64, Arizona St. 51: Devanei Hampton scored a career-high 28 points, 17 in the first half, and eighth-ranked California took sole possession of first place in the Pac-10 with a win over host Arizona State.

California (16-2, 7-0 Pac-10) is off to its best start since going 17-2 in the 1983-84 season. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the unranked Sun Devils (11-6, 5-1).
