Attorney General to appeal "moment of silence" ruling

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan will appeal a federal court ruling striking down Illinois' "Moment of Silence" law, her office said recently. The Moment of Silence law decreed that teachers in public schools had to start the day with a moment of silence so students could meditate or pray, but a federal judge struck the law down, ruling it unconstitutional because it was state promotion of religion in that it forced students to consider prayer. Madigan's office noted that similar laws in other states have been ruled constitutional. The case came to court after Buffalo Grove atheist Robert Sherman sued on behalf of his daughter, Dawn Sherman, a student at Buffalo Grove High School.
