Flood warning in wake of heavy rainfall
Officials are warning to be on the lookout for black ice on roadways this morning after the Chicago area was pounded by a record-setting amount of rain Thursday night.
The downpour prompting closure of flooded roads, though most of those roads have reopened after crews displaced the water.
Flooding remains in some sections of Chicago, Joliet, Oswego and Skokie, officials said.
Meteorologists at the National Weather Service said rain totals reached 2-inches at O'Hare International Airport, shattering a 110-year-old record for rainfall on the day. The previous record was 0.92 inches, officials said.
The storm dumped up to 1 inch of rain an hour at one point, according to the National Weather Service.
Cook, DuPage and Kane counties were all under flash flood warnings Thursday night. Lake County is under a flood warning this morning, officials said, because the Fox River has flooded slightly in New Munster, Wisc. However, barring any additional precipitation in the next week, flooding is not expected to impact Lake County. .
Meteorologists predict colder weather Friday, with highs reaching the 20s with winds keeping temps lower.
