Chicago Board of Education president to resign

A published report says the president of the Chicago Board of Education plans to resign.

Rufus Williams told the Chicago Tribune for a story on its Web site Thursday that he'll submit his resignation Friday to Mayor Richard M. Daley.

The two men recently met. Aside from saying their conversation led to his decision, Williams declined to discuss details.

The 52-year-old Williams was appointed to the school board in 2005 and became president in July 2006 under former Chief Executive Officer Arne Duncan.

When President Barack Obama appointed Duncan to become secretary of the U.S. Department of Education, Daley appointed longtime loyalist Ron Huberman to take Duncan's place.

Daley hinted then that Williams might be replaced.
