Here's the lineup of speakers
These are the participants in Plant a Row for the Hungry day, Aug. 3, at the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe:
Pesche's Garden Center will display examples of container gardening with herbs and vegetables for those folks who want loads of produce from small garden spaces. And they'll give brief hourly demonstrations on the best practices for planting and maintaining such container gardens.
Daily Herald staff writer Catherine Edman will share information about Plant a Row for the Hungry and the two area food banks: Northern Illinois Food Bank and the Greater Chicago Food Depository.
Master gardeners will be on hand with the ever-popular Plant Doctor booth answering visitors' gardening questions.
Chicago Parent magazine will help children learn gardening basics with a seed-starting activity that sends little ones home with a kid-sized garden.
Bill Aldrich, publisher of Chicagoland Gardening magazine, and "Let's Talk Gardening" host Mike Nowak from WGN-Radio will share everything essential about tomatoes, including the wealth of varieties that thrive in this region and organic methods for producing the best harvests.
A Chicago Botanic Garden volunteer will discuss tool basics: how to care for them and choose the right one for each garden job.
Russel Higgins, University of Illinois Extension Education, specializes in integrated pest management and will help visitors with bug identification, as well as ways to foster development of beneficial insects in the vegetable garden. If you go
