Man gets 4 years for Elgin robbery attempt

An 18-year-old Elgin man who tried to rob a pedestrian walking down the street has been sentenced to four years in prison.

Demarquis S. Smith, of the 300 block of Billings Street, pleaded guilty Friday to attempted robbery and was sentenced by Kane County Judge Allen M. Anderson.

Smith was one of two men arrested about 2 a.m. Oct. 16 after a 49-year-old man was attacked as he walked on the sidewalk at State and West Chicago streets in Elgin.

Police say Smith and co-defendant Aaron A. McGee, 18, of the 300 block of Booth Court, Elgin, repeatedly punched the man until he fell to the ground, then started rifling through his pockets.

The attack was witnessed by four undercover police officers who were patrolling the area and chased the suspects to the 0-100 block of South Crystal Street.

McGee pleaded guilty to attempted robbery Jan. 15 and was sentenced to two years in prison.
