Elk Grove home damaged in fire

A basement fire in Elk Grove Saturday afternoon left a home uninhabitable, officials said. Elk Grove Township firefighters responded to a 12:03 p.m. call at the 60 block of Avon.

Upon arrival, smoke was seen coming from the basement of the home.

After filling much of the basement with water, Lt. Mike Keenan said the fire was under control by about 1:30 p.m.

No one was home at the time. The family who lives in the home had been out of town, and a relative came by to check on the family dog, Keenan said. Opening a door, she met with smoke. "She grabbed the dog and called us," he said.
