Turner Classics come to DVD
Turner Classic Movies (TCM) has teamed up with Warner Home Video to release "The Greatest Classic Films Collection." There are three DVDS in the initial release, and each one retails for $27.92 and contains four films.
"TCM Classic Films Collection: Romantic Dramas": The two-disc set includes "A Streetcar Named Desire," "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," "East of Eden" and "Rebel Without a Cause."
"TCM Classic Films Collection: Romantic Comedies": "Adam's Rib," "Bringing Up Baby," "The Philadelphia Story" and "Women of the Year."
"TCM Classic Films Collection: Best Picture Winners": "An American in Paris," "Casablanca," "Gigi" and "Mrs. Miniver."
"Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired"
Nominated for the Grand Jury Prize and winner of the Editing Award at the Sundance Film Festival, this terrific documentary shows the life of film director Roman Polanski, and what happened after his famous trial in 1977. He was charged with various crimes with a 13-year-old girl, and eventually left the U.S.
Marina Zenovich's documentary uses no voice-overs, but rather has new interviews, unedited news footage and archival clips and lets viewers make up their own minds. She tries to show what really happened with the court system. There are some excellent bonus features with audio commentary, deleted scenes, interviews and more.
"Rent: Live On Broadway"
For those who have not yet seen the musical, this performance will move you. After 12 years and 5,140 performances, the show closed on Sept. 7, 2008. This is the final performance at the Nederlander Theater in New York City. The musical is loosely based on Puccini's opera "La Boheme," and tells many stories about a wide variety of artists dealing with life issues in the 1980s. Young and old came to see the energetic musical, while finding characters that they could identify with. Fans of musical theater should add this to their collection.
