Rollover crash closes Elgin road

Elgin police have closed off part of Big Timber Road and are diverting traffic during rush hour after a single-vehicle crash seriously injured a woman.

Elgin Deputy Chief Jeff Swoboda said the crash occurred at 4:19 p.m. on Big Timber about 100 yards east of Tyrrell Road on the city's far west side.

"She left the road as she was heading west and flipped over," he said.

Swoboda said the woman was taken to Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin.

Rutland-Dundee Fire Chief Rick Thomas said the male driver had to be extricated from the heavily-damaged car, which landed on its roof. A witness said the car rolled approximately 50 feet off the road before it turned over near a bend and the road was dry at the time of the accident.

Neither police nor fire personnel could identify the make of the car because it was so badly damaged.
