Amtrak train hits garbage truck
CARLINVILLE -- A stretch of railroad in southwestern Illinois is pressing closer to being reopened as crews work to clear the track of the aftermath of a collision between an Amtrak train and a garbage truck.
Amtrak says none of the northbound St. Louis-to-Chicago train's 38 passengers were seriously injured in the accident shortly after 9 a.m. Thursday just north of Carlinville.
Amtrak says the wheels of the locomotive derailed from the Union Pacific tracks after the impact, but the four-car train remained upright and coupled.
An Amtrak spokesman says the service should be resumed later Thursday.
The rail crossing is marked and equipped with warning lights and bells.
