Geneva blasts York, now 12-0
It took Emily Hinchman all of six seconds to lay the groundwork for another decisive Geneva victory.
The senior guard hit a baseline jumper moments after the opening tip against York Saturday night in Lisle, and the Vikings' girls basketball team was full-steam ahead for the 12th straight time this season.
Not even five 3-pointers from the Dukes in an offensively electric fourth quarter could derail Geneva (12-0); the Vikings cruised to an 84-61 victory in third-round action of the Naperville North/Benet Holiday Tournament.
Hinchman, coming off a career-high 20 points in the Vikings' 62-48 victory over Benet on Friday, scored 17 points and dished out 8 assists in leading the latest one-sided win.
"We're a really fast team, and the posts (Lauren Wicinski and Kelsey Augustine) do a great job of rebounding the ball and getting it back out," Hinchman said. "We've been playing with a lot of intensity of late. We have a target on our back (for being undefeated). We just don't want to get too confident yet."
Augustine broke the only tie of the game - 12-12 five minutes into the first quarter - with an inside score, and the Vikings' high-octane offense took over from there.
The Vikings' four-year standout Taylor Whitley had a mere pair of free throws in the opening quarter, which ended with Geneva holding a 20-16 lead. But the Vikings' forced York (4-8) into missing 7 of its 8 shot attempts in the second quarter, building a 39-22 cushion at the break as Whitley found her game.
The Indiana State-bound guard slashed through the Dukes' defense for the remaining three quarters to the tune of a game-high 31-point evening. Whitley feasted off several feeds from her backcourt mate, and her putback with five seconds to play before halftime gave Geneva its 17-point spread at the break.
"Emily has been doing it all lately," Whitley said. "She is a very unselfish player. It's just not one person who has been putting up double digits."
Wicinski, who augmented the career Hinchman night on Friday with 17 points, added 14 more against the Dukes with 8 rebounds. Augustine became the fourth Viking to hit double digits with 10 points.
"We have a lot of people who are contributing," Geneva coach Gina Nolan said.
York mounted several runs in the second half, but the Vikings' blistering 45-point output after the intermission subdued any upset talk.
Courtney Owens had 20 points to lead York, and sixth-man Amanda Heuser added 14.
