Hersey handles Clark

Thanksgiving Tournaments are designed to help a team prepare for the rest of the season. Hersey used the four games at the York Tournament as a learning opportunity.

Following Saturday night's win, a 71-47 decision over Clark from Chicago, Huskies coach Steve Messer was able to make some determinations.

"What I liked is that we showed a consistent energy level in all four games," Messer said. "We had a some good things happen to us, even in the games we lost to Neuqua Valley and Morton. They are two of the top rated teams in the area. What we need to do now is extend those efforts. We need to take better care of the ball and take better shots."

The Huskies (2-2) broke out to a 10-0 lead in the first 3:19 of the game. Clark (0-4) closed the gap to 12-9, but Hersey spun off a 9-0 run to end the quarter ahead 21-9.

Kyle Mengarelli (18 points, 6 rebounds) scored Hersey's first 6 points of the second quarter to build a 27-9 lead, and the Eagles could not recover.

Kyle Miklasz added 13 points. Jordan Mertes scored 11 points as did Brian Fabrizius who also pulled down 10 rebounds.

Xavier Biles came through with a 22-point performance for Clark. Harlan Lyons added 10 points.

"We played some tough teams here,"said Mengarelli. "This was good for us. We need to play better defense and play together like we did tonight. When we do that we play good."

"Kyle's a captain and he is playing strong," said Messer. "I expect that of him. I like the way Connor Miklasz played. He became more agressive and hard-nosed each game."
