Legendary radio voice Red Rush dies
Red Rush, the former radio voice of the Loyola University Chicago men's basketball team, died Sunday in Moraga, Calif. He was 81.
Rush gained notoriety as the radio play-by-play broadcaster for Loyola's1962-63 basketball team which claimed the NCAA Championship by defeating defending two-time champion Cincinnati in overtime. Known for his signature phrases during games, Rush entertained his Chicago audiences with lines such as "Swisheroo…for two" and "He eyes it, he tries it, he buys it". Rush's voice will forever be remembered for his call of Vic Rouse's put-back at the buzzer in overtime to give Loyola the 1963 NCAA title. When the final horn sounded, he boomed "We won! We won! We won the ballgame!"
A versatile and extremely popular broadcaster, Rush also served as the radio voice for the Kansas City Athletics, the Oakland Athletics, Chicago White Sox and St. Louis Cardinals in baseball, while also calling the action for Northwestern football and DePaul basketball, among other teams.
