Roadwork on tap for Geneva, St. Charles
Route 31 between St. Charles and Geneva will see intermittent lane closures this summer as crews resurface and re-stripe the heavily traveled highway.
The Illinois Department of Transportation is scheduled to begin the project July 27 at Third Street in Geneva and move north to Horne Street in St. Charles, officials said.
The work involves milling, paving and work to curbs and sidewalks, as well as minor improvements to storm sewers. It will take place on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.
"We'll have flaggers there to direct traffic," IDOT engineer Faiyaz Dave said. "It will be a moving operation. The lane closures will not be permanent."
Also on tap for St. Charles this summer are upgrades to the traffic signal at Route 38 and 14th Street. That project is expected to start Aug. 1 and be complete by Sept. 15.
IDOT engineer Scott Soderstrom said crews will replace signal heads, arms and cables, and make other general upgrades.
He said workers will try to avoid lane closures and do the bulk of the work outside of rush hour, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
"It's not a complete reconstruction," Soderstrom said. "We're going to try to make minimal disruptions to traffic."
The state has enlisted contractors Virgil Cook & Son Inc. and Plote Inc. to handle the improvements, according to a news release from the city of St. Charles.
