Selke selected for spot in IADA's Hall of Fame
John Selke couldn't have asked for a better honor to cap his 16-year career as an athletic director at Schaumburg.
On May 2, Selke was one of four inductees into the Illinois Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame in Springfield.
"It's the exclamation point to a fantastic career," said Selke, who retired from the position in 2005. "It's just hard to describe what a tremendous honor that really and truly was.
"When I think of all the athletic directors through the state of Illinois, it's amazing and mind-boggling my name would get called."
Selke student-taught and spent another year at Rolling Meadows and had an excellent role model in Tom O'Driscoll. He came to Schaumburg in 1973 and coached football and track and returned in 1989 after a three-year stint as an assistant principal at Conant.
Selke followed in the footsteps of John Paul, who was in the first IADA Hall of Fame class, and Gary Scholz. Schaumburg was one of the state's premier athletic programs under Selke.
"It was something I always wanted to do and I always wanted to provide opportunities for kids to be successful," Selke said. "That was my main philosophy and main goal and the success of our athletic programs reflected that. The kids were the most important part."
