The greatest team of all time? So hard to tell

So who would you consider to be the greatest team of all time in your area?

Is that the impossible task?

Interestingly enough, one Joliet-area radio station has begun to run a contest that could bring several debates and talk on its best team of all time.

WJOL, AM-1340 in Crest Hill is part of the NextMedia radio group decided to run a contest called the Fantasy Tournament Team of All Time.

WJOL's morning host and program director, Scott Slocum, hatched the idea and the station has decided to run with it to so far great response and success.

So just how did the radio station determine the top eight teams that will square off? None other than the fans, who submitted their teams of all time for nomination.

Starting this week on the radio station's Web site located at www.wjol.com you can begin voting online for the eight nominated teams. The fans' voting will determine the winners in the bracket-style tournament.

Let the October Madness begin?

So which team so far this fall has arguably the best combination of offense and defense heading into Week 6 play?

Class 3A Carterville (5-0), located just a few miles north of Carbondale in Southern Illinois and part of the Black Diamond Conference, has scored an impressive 252 points in just 5 games while allowing just 21 points so far this season. The Lions under coach Dennis Drust have posted three shutouts in five games so far this season.

Other teams of note? The Central Suburban South's Glenbrook South (5-0) has scored 204 points and has allowed just 35 points. Conference rival Maine South (5-0) has also scored an impressive 250 points while allowing just 56 points. Playoff time is approaching. As hard as that sounds to believe we are just a few weeks away from state playoffs when the state playoff pairings are announced on Saturday, Oct. 25. Here are a few surprising numbers to keep in mind from an overall playoff pairings standpoint.

Schools with perfect 5-0 records with an abnormally low numbers of playoff points? Chicago Harlan 11 points), Chicago Hope Academy (12 points), Crystal Lake Central (13 points) and Huntley (14 points).

Both Glenbard North (2-3 33 points) and Providence Catholic (2-3 31 points) have played rough schedules so far this season, but if they get five wins they will be two very tough teams to face in the opening round, to say the least.
