Scouting Lake Forest @ Lake Zurich
Lake Forest (3-4, 2-2) at Lake Zurich (4-3, 3-2)
When: 7:30 p.m. today
Last week: Lake Forest def. Grant, 38-35; Lake Zurich def. Mundelein, 25-7.
Skinny: Lake Zurich is gearing up for one of its most unique tests of the season, but has a bit of a leg up on most teams that have to find a way to solve pass-happy Lake Forest and Notre Dame-bound quarterback Tommy Rees. Rees passed for 335 yards and 2 touchdowns last week against Grant and is the most prolific passing quarterback in Lake County this season. One of his favorite targets, Connor Moutvic, also happens to be one of the best receivers in Lake County. But the Bears believe they'll be ready. "We played Wheaton North (in Week 2) and they threw the ball a lot, too," Lake Zurich coach Bryan Stortz said. "They mixed in some rushing plays, so they weren't quite as pass-oriented as Lake Forest, but they certainly wanted to throw it. I thought our guys did pretty well against that kind of offense. Our secondary was strong and so was our defensive line." Lake Zurich ended up defeating Wheaton North soundly, 35-9-The Bears are also coming off a big win over Mundelein in which two players, Devian Ruiz and Jacob Brinlee, rushed for more than 100 yards. Ruiz rolled up 144 yards while Brinlee finished with 106 yards. "We were playing in some pretty sloppy conditions with mud and everything and I thought we still did a really good job of establishing ourselves," Stortz said. "Our offensive line did a nice job-and so did our defensive line." Led by Matt Frase, Aaron Lewandowski, Kia McGee and Collin Lennon, the Lake Zurich defense held Mundelein to just 153 yards and 6 first downs. "We're going to have to be tough again on defense," Stortz said. "We have to have some special things in place to deal with (Rees). We can't let him get comfortable by doing the same thing all day long."
