Troops, families sacrifice for all

Mrs. Hayes, it took me a while to write you, but I do so to let you know how grateful we are for good people like your family being a part of this great country.

As I was reading your note to the opinion column of the Daily Herald, I had to stop to wipe away my tears.

I guess I'm as guilty as the next one for I have so far been lucky enough not to have any of my family serving in Iraq. However, I do have grandchildren who will soon be of age for the draft.

I pray daily and attend mass for our troops. My husband is a veteran of the Korean War, served in Korea, but saw no combat and came back to the states because of his mom's serious illness of cancer.

You're right, a generation ago National Guardsman attended meetings and helped during a disaster if need be, unless an all-out war broke out against America.

Most of us hate wars. My husband and I are confirmed supporters of our troops and veterans with clothing drives and donations. I hope when we send monetary donations the veterans get the full benefit. I know we play a small part in helping, but my husband being a veteran does what he can.

Our humble and heartfelt thanks to you, your husband and family for trying to secure our futures here at home.
