Naperville man gets 90 days for child porn
A former Naperville real estate agent was sentenced Monday to 90 days in jail for possessing child pornography on his home computer.
Roy A. Stavenger, 66, also must serve two years' probation, seek counseling and register as a sex offender. He faced up to a five-year prison term after pleading guilty last fall.
Police arrested Stavenger in August 2003 after a forensic examination of his computer uncovered several sexually explicit images of female children.
Authorities began investigating Stavenger when an acquaintance spotted the images on his computer and called DuPage County CrimeStoppers. The acquaintance had been watching Stavenger's home at 1569 Swallow Drive for him while he was away.
Stavenger's attorney, Robert Kleeman, sought leniency. He noted Stavenger's age and clean past. Prosecutors, though, urged a prison term after noting a probation evaluation that found Stavenger poses a potential risk because he continues to minimize his actions.
Stavenger still maintains his innocence but opted to plead guilty rather than fight the allegations because of the potential prison term.
He said the home computer used to be in his office, where up to 50 other people had access to it. Stavenger also said he passed lie-detector tests proving his innocence.
Stavenger must report to the DuPage County jail later this month to begin serving his sentence. DuPage Circuit Judge Perry Thompson also ordered another 90-day jail stint if he fails to comply with the terms of his probation.
