Sky loses Fowles for 4-6 weeks to knee injury
A day after taking Candace Parker and the Los Angeles Sparks into overtime, the Chicago Sky suffered an even bigger loss.
Rookie center Sylvia Fowles, who injured her left knee in the third quarter of Wednesday's game while trying to block a shot, suffered a sprained knee and will be out four to six weeks.
The 6-foot-6 Fowles, the team's leading shot blocker and No. 2 rebounder, was taken to the University of Illinois Medical Center for tests, and doctors determined that she has a knee sprain.
No surgery is required, but she will begin treatments today, according to team officials.
Fowles was averaging 10.8 points, 7.6 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game for the Sky (1-4), which plays Atlanta (0-5) today.
If her recovery takes the full six weeks, Fowles would miss about 15 games and possibly could return for a home game against Connecticut on July 18. Chasity Melvin will likely replace Fowles in the starting lineup.
Fowles is expected to join the U.S. Olympic team in August while the WNBA takes a four-week break in its season.
