Lake Zurich team wins Woodstock softball tourney

Lake Zurich's softball team went 3-for-3.

The Bears got three victories en route to the Woodstock tournament championship Saturday.

The Bears defeated Conant 4-2, Naperville North 3-2 and Harvard 11-0. Against Conant, winning pitcher Megan Mattera moved her record to 4-1 by rolling up 8 strikeouts. Offensively, the Bears got 2 hits apiece from Paige Goldberg, Coryn Schmit and Kelli Blume. Schmit also had a home run, as did Amanda Orchard.

Mattera also got the win in the circle in the second game, rolling up 11 strikeouts. Offensively she had the Bears' only hit for extra bases, a double. Against Harvard, pitcher Tabbetha Bohac tallied 14 strikeouts while Kaitlin Beaver went 4-for-4 at the plate with a home run and 4 RBI.

Stevenson sweep Hersey: Stevenson beat Hersey twice by identical scores, 3-2.

The Patriots won the first game in dramatic fashion thanks to a double with two outs in the bottom of the seventh innings by Ashley Niedermayer. In the second game, Stevenson scored 3 runs in the bottom of the second and held on. Pitcher Allison Micucci, who also got the win in the first game, rolled up 6 strikeouts and allowed no walks or hits in 4 2/3 innings of work.

Lakes sweeps Libertyville: Lakes swept a North Suburban crossover against Libertyville 5-2, 6-3.

Pitcher Devin Ksioszk got the win in the first game while Taylor Dare won the finale. For Libertyville, Erika Teitz and Danielle Kaczmar each had 2 hits in the first game, and Teitz again had 2 hits in the second game.

Vernon Hills sweeps: Vernon Hills got a pair of wins over Buffalo Grove, 15-5, 6-2.

In the first game, Amanda Zusman got her first victory of the season on the mound. She gave up just 1 walk in 5 2/3 innings.

In Game 2, pitcher Megan Meline rolled up 13 strikeouts to help the Cougars move to 3-1 on the season. Erin Christensen and Adriana Longobardi each had 2 hits for Vernon Hills.

Zion-Benton sweeps Waukegan: The Zee-Bees won 1-0 and 11-1 to improve to 8-2.

Jessica Munda improved to 5-0 in the opener, striking out 10 and not walking a batter.

Jennifer Lotz (3-1) pitched a five-inning complete game in Game 2. The Zee-Bees were led offensively by Abby Hanson (3-for-3, 3 runs, 3 RBI, double, home run), Munda (2-for-2, 2 RBI, homer) and Janika May (2-for-3, 2 runs, 2 RBI, 2 doubles).
