Five injured in Bensenville crash

A northbound portion of Route 83 in Bensenville remained closed Wednesday afternoon following a multivehicle crash that left a truck driver critically injured.

Bensenville fire officials said the man was driving a semitrailer truck that struck another truck from behind and pushed it into three cars. The accident happened about 2 p.m. at the intersection of Route 83 and Third Avenue.

Fire Chief Michael Spain said the truck driver had to be extricated from his vehicle. He was taken by helicopter to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

Four other people were injured. One refused treatment and the three others were transported with non-life-threatening injuries to Elmhurst Memorial Hospital.

Emergency crews responded from Addison, Bensenville, Elmhurst, Wood Dale and Elk Grove Village. The DuPage County sheriff's office is investigating.
