Carpentersvile factory smoke sends 14 to hospital
Ten firefighters and four factory employees were taken to the hospital Saturday morning after they were exposed to smoke in a Carpentersville factory, firefighters said.
All of the firefighters and employees were released by noon.
Firefighters responded about 6:15 a.m. to Revcor Incorporated, 250 Edwards Ave., when a parts cleaning machine overheated, sending smoke and chemical vapors through the building. There was no fire.
Firefighters evacuated the factory and left the building when they determined the smoke was coming from a machine that contained a corrosive substance.
Seven ambulances took the firefighters and employees to several local hospitals as a precautionary measure.
Firefighters called in a hazardous materials team, which shut down the machine and ventilated the building. Emergency crews from 14 area fire departments left the scene at 11:30 a.m.
Employees told firefighters an electrical problem may have caused the machine to overheat.
