Dukane's new hand-held system may advance

St. Charles-based Dukane Corp.'s Dukane Audio Visual business has supplied film strip and audiovisual projectors to schools for about 70 years.

But that business has evolved over the years as technology has changed.

Now, the company has the Convey Student Response, part of its Convey Solutions, with hand-held devices so students can immediately answer questions or tests. Teachers then get the responses in real time and can decide quickly to move the lessons ahead or to review.

It's being used at Wredling Middle School in St. Charles since last fall and in about 3,000 classrooms in Garland, Texas.

"It's our first volley into the connected classrooms," said John Mucci, general manager of Dukane's Convey System products.

The cost is $1,995 for 32 hand-held devices for the students and the software system.

Dukane is planning to take the Convey system to the next phase. This would include upgrades to allow the network to provide aggregated data throughout the school district.

They are also exploring an online element to allow parents to track their child's responses or test progress.
