Briefs: 12th rabid bat reported
The McHenry County Department of Health reported its 12th rabid bat this year, one short of last year's county record of 13. The bats were found Aug. 2 on a bike path in Crystal Lake, on a backyard deck in Spring Grove Aug. 4 and in a kitchen Aug. 13. There was no human exposure in any of the recent cases. Since April, rabid bats have been found in Woodstock, Cary and Island Lake. Some 68 people in McHenry County have received rabies treatment since the beginning of the year as a precautionary measure. Statewide, the Illinois Department of Public Health has reported 42 rabid bats. If a bat is found in the home, call McHenry County Animal Control at (815) 459-6222. Try to contain it in a room or under a bucket. In order to test for rabies, the animal must be alive or recently deceased. Questions about exposure should be directed to the communicable disease program at (815) 334-4500.
