California firm may buy window plant where workers staged sit-in
A California window-and-glass maker is in discussions to buy a now-bankrupt Chicago factory where workers staged a sit-in that drew national attention to the plight of laid-off laborers.
Sunnyvale-based Serious Materials says it's speaking with Republic Windows and Doors creditors.
The California firm's CEO, Kevin Surace, says the plan would be to reopen the shuttered plant and hire the same workers.
Last month, Republic's owners gave workers just days notice before firing them. Around 200 occupied the plant for nearly a week until Republic agreed to demands for severance and accrued vacation pay.
Union leaders say workers are excited about the plant's possible reopening.
Surace declined to disclose the asking price for the factory.
