Current Events
Current Events' Dec. 11 meeting began with Rich Wille of SunCPac providing information on the sizeable projected levy increase for Huntley Unit District 158. Jerry McMahon took the microphone to contend that District 158 school board members Larry Snow and Aileen Seedorf were trying to keep taxes down but are outnumbered on the board. The moderator suggested that Snow, both in public statements and private conversations, has said that the most important thing is to improve educational outcomes, and that some of his proposals require increased expenditures.
McMahon then said that SunCPac should try harder to lower taxes. Wille explained that his organization is seeking to improve equitability and transparency in assessments, not lower taxes, and that lower assessments don't necessarily result in lower taxes. He said citizens who seek lower taxes should make their voices heard at D-158 meetings as well as those of other taxing bodies.
Several members commented negatively on the recent turmoil on the District 158 board, which was reported in the newspapers.
Bill Ziletti, Barry Marcus and Jim Henley of the Finance Advisory Committee answered questions about the Sun City Community Association's 2008 budget and the new monthly assessment. Marcus riposted the charge that the committee doesn't make an effort to save money by pointing to savings from reduced sidewalk snow removal, and use of an alternative electricity supplier. Ziletti responded to a question about the sales center conversion cost by explaining that money has been set aside based on a rough estimate. Other questions were asked and answered, such as the need for the reserve fund to avoid special assessments when a major expenditure arises.
