Pedestrian dies after being hit by semi on I-355 near Naperville
A man was killed Wednesday morning after jumping off the Maple Street bridge onto I-355, where he was struck by a semitrailer truck, Downers Grove police said.
Sgt. David Bormann said the man, who police did not identify, was walking across the bridge on Maple Street about 8:49 a.m. when witnesses saw him intentionally jump over the side onto the busy road below.
He said the man landed on the tollway in front of the truck, which could not stop in time.
Bormann said the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
It remains unclear if the man was attempting to commit suicide, Bormann said. The incident remains under investigation.
Northbound I-355 was closed for about 30 minutes while emergency crews tended to the scene, Bormann said.
One lane on the highway reopened about 9:15 a.m., and the entire accident scene was cleared by 11 a.m., Bormann said.
