Football preview: Benet at Oswego
Nonconference
Game time: 7:30 p.m., today.
Last year: Oswego 31, Benet 15.
Outlook: This one's somewhat of a tough call because of the retirement of Hall of Fame Oswego coach Karl Hoinkes, who led the Panthers to state championships in 1992 and 2003. Former defensive coordinator Dave Keely has taken over and, according to Benet coach Gary Goforth, "he's not going to change much." Benet hopes to change last year's outcome, in which the Redwings scored no offensive touchdowns and gained 129 yards to Oswego's 355. Benet's double-wing offense looks to take off with a new quarterback, John Paul Payne, whose execution has been crisp in practice. Seeking a go-to threat at receiver, Payne may throw the ball up a couple times and hope 6-foot-3 Ben Menconi comes down with it.
Next week: Montini at Benet at Benedictine University; Oswego at Bartlett.
