Two Bartlett men killed while crossing street
Two male pedestrians were struck and killed early Friday as they ran across Lake Street in Bartlett, police said.
Witnesses told police that Javier Galvan of Bartlett and a second man, both in their late 30s, ran into the path of a 1996 Chevy pickup truck traveling east on Lake Street near Oak Avenue. They were hit about 12:30 a.m.
Galvan died at the scene. His roommate died while being transported to Sherman Hospital in Elgin.
Police have not released his identity because they haven't been able to locate family members, whom they believe live in Mexico.
The roommates lived across the street from where they were struck and most likely were on their way home, Bartlett police Sgt. Mike McGuigan said.
Authorities said the pickup driver immediately stopped and attempted to help the victims. Police tested for him for alcohol and drugs and found no indications of intoxication.
An investigation concluded the pickup driver wasn't speeding in the 45 mph zone and that he had the right of way. He didn't have time to react and won't be charged, police said.
McGuigan said there are no "visibility issues" or curves on that section of Lake Street.
