Reserves spark Barrington; Solis propels Maine West
On Tuesday night, the Barrington boys basketball team started slow, but found a spark from a lineup of mostly reserves late in the second quarter.
It was able to carry that spark through the rest of the game for its first win of the season, a 61-50 nonconference decision over visiting Elgin.
The lineup matched starting forward Mack Darrow with reserves Daniel Evers, Ben Bartz, Riley O'Daniel and Chris Howard.
"Thos guys came in and just did a great job," Barrington coach Marty Dello said. "They got in the passing lanes, and made some quick shots. They did a great job."
The Broncos cut an Elgin lead of what had been as big as 9 points down to just 2 at the half. Because of that run, Dello decided to start those five players in the second half.
The momentum was able to carry over, with the Broncos outscoring the Maroons 34-21 after halftime.
"When you come out timid, you're going to get down quick," Darrow said. "We realized we could kind of get into these guys defensively and we can run on them. I don't know exactly why we came out slow, but when you come out timid, good things don't happen."
The 6-foot-8 Darrow led Barrington with 13 points, and showed a good mix of inside and outside skills. He hit two 3-pointers to go along with a couple hoops from the inside.
"I've become fairly versatile, so you just try to move around and give teams different looks," Darrow said. "Give them stuff they aren't prepared for and just try to get everyone involved."
Dello feels his team is very deep, and it showed against Elgin as he used 14 players. Dello said with so many players capable of helping Barrington, he is trying to seek out which combination is the best on a given night.
One player who was hot for the Broncos against Elgin was Bartz, who was the 12th of the 14 Bronco players to enter the game. Bartz made the most of his opportunity, though, by scoring 12 points, 7 of which came in the second quarter.
"He has a lot of potential," Dello said of Bartz, who is a junior. "He had a great game. He knocked down some shots, got some rebounds, got to the rim on some drives. So that was really pleasant to see him step up."
Barrington (1-6) bombed away from beyond the 3-point line against Elgin (2-4), sinking 7 attempts from that distance. Kyle O'Keefe had 3 of those baskets and finished with 11 points.
For Elgin, Tom Roth led the way with a game-high 20 points. Marcus Redburg added 10 points, and Aleks Kanlic chipped in with 9.
Maine W. 51, Deerfield 38: The plan was to get 6-7 Tommy Solis the ball inside.
The plan couldn't have worked any better as Solis scored a career-high 29 points and Maine West (1-6, 1-0) won its Central Suburban North opener in Des Plaines.
"The players just did a great job of getting Tommy the ball and we kept it simple and he finished," said Maine West coach Erik McNeill. "We haven't been able to get him the ball nearly as much as we'd like to.
"It was fun to see Tommy work the post and do what we think he's capable of doing consistently."
Solis had 11 second-quarter points and 18 at halftime to push Maine West to a 29-21 lead. Alex Samuelson added 8 points and Sebastian Stasiakiewicz scored 6 points.
Maine West also allowed a season-low in points.
