Seeking clarity on Glen Ellyn project

The Glen Ellyn Park District board has been getting media attention lately about financial questions, asked by the three new commissioners, relating to the Ackerman Fitness Complex. Several board members have persisted in a misrepresentation of my position.

Let me be clear: it has never been my intention to stop construction of the Ackerman Complex. In fact, my running mates and I published almost a year ago on our campaign Web site, www.vote3fortheparks.com: "Finish construction on the Ackerman Sports Complex. This project is well underway and should be completed on time and on budget."

It has also been reported that there is some kind of personality issue at play in this debate. While we understand that there are clear philosophical differences, we three are focused on the importance of clear and accurate accounting. For the last several months, Commissioners Creech, Kinzler and I have requested documents related to the construction of the Ackerman Complex and spent many hours talking to staff about the details. Each time we ask a hard question or request information, the new set of documents has shown a different bottom line.

We understand the issues inherent in any construction project and agree that a certain amount of cost overrun is to be expected and that there have been material changes made to improve the project with increased cost, but these costs should be clearly reported and public.

These irregularities are the reason that I and commissioners Creech and Kinzler voted at the last meeting to direct staff to locate outside auditing firms for a forensic audit of the Ackerman construction project. The other four commissioners voted against the motion. We are not attempting to stop the construction, only make certain that its expenses are proper and clearly reported.

Julia Nephew

Commissioner, Glen Ellyn Park District
