Immaculate Coneption pays steep price in 34-14 victory
Immaculate Conception 34, Walther Lutheran 14: Immaculate Conception earned what may be a highly costly 34-14 nonconference victory Saturday in Melrose Park.
On the last play of a first half IC (1-1) led 21-0, the Knights' two-way star Carlos Rodriguez intercepted a pass and on the return suffered a right knee injury. He'll get an MRI on Tuesday.
"Most likely he tore his ACL and is out for the year," said IC coach Mike Alberts.
A senior fullback-linebacker, Rodriguez ran for 1,502 yards and 19 touchdowns and made 84 tackles in IC's Class 2A state championship season of 2008. Alberts said he'd already scored a touchdown Saturday on Walther (0-2) before suffering the injury.
The Knights also got a rushing touchdown from quarterback Will Cronin in the first half, and Cronin passed to Kyle Siranovic for another first-half touchdown.
Cronin finished with 2 rushing touchdowns, and Rodriguez's backup, Deric Shonuga, ran for a second-half touchdown.
Oak Park 28, Hinsdale South 14: The host Huskies (1-1) snapped a 14-14 tie at halftime to beat West Suburban Conference crossover foe Hinsdale South (0-2).
It ruined an outstanding performance by Hinsdale South quarterback Kevin Miller. The senior ran for 156 yards on 17 carries with a 31-yard touchdown run. Miller also had a 56-yard run.
The Hornets executed a 27-yard reverse pass from Garrett Vanhal to Nick Sarocco to knot the score at with 4:06 left in the second quarter.
"Overall we played pretty well defensively, then we gave up the big play," said Hinsdale South coach Alex Bitto.
Dorion Grant led Oak Park with 145 yards and touchdown runs of 1 and 35 yards.
