Atheist who should get God's blessing

As a Christian, I normally expect to be out of synch with any idea posed by an avowed atheist. Yet I find myself saying, "God bless Robert Sherman."

Sherman has brought suit in federal court to declare unconstitutional the new Illinois law that requires a moment of silence at the beginning of the school day. Never mind that the time span of a "moment" is undefined. The law is a thinly-disguised foot in the door for religion in public schools, which are supposed to educate our children, not foster religion -- any religion.

Who do our so-called "leaders" think they are fooling? I'm reminded of Paul's cautioning the Galatians: "Be not deceived. God is not mocked."

The God in whom Christians believe does not enforce worship. A basic tenet of our faith is that God loves and accepts us just as we are, and our worship and service in God's name is a grateful response for that unmerited love and acceptance.

The folks in Springfield would do better to apply their time and talents to addressing our state's more crucial problems that they continually sidestep or bungle, and leave God's work to God.
