Grayslake Central falls short in semifinal

Grayslake Central's boys basketball team suffered its first loss in the State Farm Holiday Classic on Wednesday night.

The Rams fell 68-59 to Champaign Centennial at Illinois Wesleyan University's Shirk Center in Bloomington.

Jordan Taylor led Grayslake Central with 14 points, while Josh Rappaport and Andrew Sipes each scored 11. Taylor, Rappaport and Matt Murphy each sank two 3-pointers.

Champaign Centennial's Rayvonte Rice led all scorers with 36 points.

The game was tied 27-27 at halftime, but Champaign Centennial outscored the Rams 19-15 in the third quarter and 22-17 in the fourth.

Grayslake Central (6-5, 2-1) wraps up the tournament today with 10:30 a.m. tipoff against North Chicago in third-place game at Normal West.

Champaign Centennial meets Rockton Hononegah in today's 2:45 p.m. championship game at the Shirk Center.

Plainfield East 61, Lake Zurich 39: At Pekin, the Bears led 6-2 early, but trailed 16-10 at the end of the opening quarter and never recovered in the seventh-place consolation game.

Lake Zurich (1-12, 0-4 tournament) was led by Marko Grcic, who posted game highs of 17 points and 8 rebounds.

Lake Forest 57, Rock Island Alleman 41: In the State Farm Holiday Classic, Mitch Hopfinger scored 25 points for the Scouts.

Lake Forest also received 11 points from Thomas Durrett and 10 from Tommy Rees.

Rockton Hononegah 88, North Chicago 54: In the State Farm Holiday Classic, Aaron Simpson scored 20 points in the Warhawks' loss. Derrick Bryant had 12 for North Chicago.
