Geneva collegian to run for city council

Residents of Geneva's 5th Ward could go from being represented by an 80-year-old to a guy who isn't old enough to buy beer.

John Trierweiler, 20, announced Thursday that he is running for the seat being vacated by Alderman Paul DesCoteaux.

DesCoteaux has served on the council for more than 20 years.

Trierweiler, who attends Columbia College in Chicago, lists volunteer experience with the Geneva Fire Department, including organizing a drive to provide 1,000 smoke detectors to homes on the east side of town, on his resume. He also volunteered at the Geneva History Center, and the Geneva Emergency Services and Disaster Agency. He earned his Eagle Scout award in 2006.

Most recently, he received a humorous commendation from Mayor Kevin Burns for suggesting, along with a friend, the color of the new Geneva refuse stickers - a bold pink. He also served on the mock student government city council that in 2006 initiated the debate about enacting a smoking ban for Geneva restaurants.

"Helping and working with people is always something I have enjoyed doing," said Trierweiler in a prepared statement. By working closely with city officials, Trierweiler hopes to continue the development of the East State Street Corridor, the old Kane County jail site and Settlers Hill Landfill. Trierweiler also wants to maintain and continue to make the 5th ward and downtown area a great place to live, work, and visit.
