2 hurt in head-on Hampshire crash

Two people were taken to the hospital after a head-on crash Tuesday morning west of Hampshire.

The drivers of a white pickup truck and a luxury sedan were taken to Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin. One had minor injuries; the other suffered ankle and chest injuries that were not life-threatening, firefighters said.

Authorities did not release the names of the drivers.

The crash took place around 10:45 a.m. on Route 72 just west of Engel Road, firefighters said.

Police shut down Route 72 from Walker to New Lebanon roads for about an hour.

The vehicles collided when one of the drivers lost control on the slick road and crossed the center line, hitting the other vehicle, firefighters said.

"The road was pretty iced over, so that may have played a role in the crash," said Lt. Pat Gengler with the Kane County Sheriff's Department.

The sheriff's department responded to several minor crashes Tuesday in which icy roads may have been a factor.

Gengler could not say whether any citations had been issued yet.

The vehicles were totaled and ended up on south shoulder of Route 72, authorities said.

Rescue crews had to cut through the door of one of the vehicles to get the driver out, according to firefighters.

"We wanted to get them out of the weather as fast as possible," Hampshire Fire Capt. Bill Robinson said.

Neither of the drivers had passengers, firefighters said.
