Actor Matt Dillon pleads not guilty to speeding

CHELSEA, Vt. -- Matt Dillon's lawyer has entered a not guilty plea to a speeding charge in a Dec. 30 traffic stop in which police say they spotted the actor doing 106 mph on an interstate highway.

Lawyer Mark Kaplan told Judge Mary Miles Teachout in Vermont District Court for Orange County on Wednesday that he and Dillon hope to resolve the case without the 44-year-old going to trial.

A police statement filed with the court says Dillon was cooperative after the stop in Newbury and quotes him as saying, "I screwed up, I know, I know."

Dillon was charged with driving the rented Chevrolet Impala at more than 30 mph above the 65-mph speed limit posted on Interstate 91.

If convicted, he could get three months in jail and be fined $300.
