Man arrested after high-speed chase held on bond in Kane Co.
A man who lead police on a high-speed car chase early Thursday is being held in the Kane County jail on bond set at $7,500.
According to Sgt. Jack Rood of the Gilberts police, Carlos N. Johnson, 32, of the 1100 block of east Cass Street, Joliet, was charged with three felony counts of aggravated fleeing or evading police, possession of a controlled substance, driving under the influence, criminal damage to property, driving on a revoked license and nearly 20 traffic violations. No one was injured.
Rood, who was present at the bond hearing Friday, said that Johnson told the judge that he lived on Woodridge Drive in Round Lake Beach. Rood believes that this address is that of Johnson's girlfriend.
Rood said a Gilberts police officer spotted a Dodge Caravan without a license plate and registration light about 5 a.m. Thursday. When the officer attempted to pull the van over on Big Timber Road near Meadows Drive, Johnson sped away and led two Gilberts officers, two Hampshire officers and a Kane County sheriff's deputy on a 5-mile chase for about 10 minutes through Gilberts and Hampshire.
Rood said that Johnson reached speeds in excess of 80 miles per hour and lost control of his van several times, nearly colliding with a squad car and a passenger car.
"He was crossing the center line, turning around, and driving the opposite way," Rood said. "We have video of this."
The chase ended when Johnson slammed into the passenger side of a Gilberts squad car and another Gilberts squad car blocked his way.
Police said they found what appeared to be crack cocaine in the van. Johnson was on parole and had an outstanding arrest warrant out of Will County. Rood said that Johnson was wanted on traffic violations.
