Rettig returns to normal

It appears Jordan Rettig picked up right where she left off last season.

Rettig, a three-year starting center for Rosary, opened the girls basketball season with 16 points and 17 rebounds in the Royals' 57-28 win over visiting IMSA in nonconference action in Aurora on Monday.

"Jordan had a nice game," Rosary coach Dave Beebe said of the junior.

"(I'm) just trying to be a leader and helping everybody out," Rettig added.

In addition to Rettig, the only other player in double-digits in scoring was Stephanie Haugen with 10 points. Fourteen girls played and 12 of them scored.

Offensively, Beebe was pleased. Defensively, not so much.

"It's just a lack of communication," Beebe said.

"We were a little rusty, but now we know what we have to work on in practice," Rettig added. "We really weren't talking as much as we should have been."

Rosary (1-0) scored the first 15 points of the game, led by five different players. A pair of free throws by Isolina Rossi broke IMSA's drought with 1:42 left in the first. It would be the only points the Titans scored, as the Royals were ahead 19-2 by the end of the quarter.

Rosary did more damage early in the second after scoring 6 consecutive points in the first two minutes. By the break, it led 33-8.

The Royals' biggest lead arrived after a basket from Haugen put them ahead 47-11 with less than two minutes left in the third.

IMSA's best effort arrived in the fourth, when it doubled its total points and ended up outscoring the Royals 14-10 in the final frame. The Titans were led by Rossi's 11 points and 10 rebounds.
